Well the Oscars were last night. The pomp. The celebrity. That near queer Ryan Seacrest working the red carpet like a starving whore when the fleet comes in. Hugh Jackman queened it up, only proving to me further his amazing acting chops. I mean have we ever seen Wolverine sashay about like that swishy fuck does? Musical numbers… bad shtick… he was a cock away from breaking the hearts of millions of comic book nerds. But for what he was, he wasn’t bad… not good by any stretch of the imagination but not bad.
As with most years, obscure indie films not seen by middle America ruled the day as Slumdog Millionaire ruled the day, winning many of the night’s awards including Best Picture and Best Director (to Danny Boyle). Heath Ledger won the Best Supporting Actor Award, for his terrifying performance of the Joker in The Dark Knight. Since he is no longer with us, the award was accepted for him by his sister and his father.
The lone upset of the night came in the Best Actor category, as Sean Penn beat out the heavily favored Mickey Rourke for his performance in Milk. Personally I have no idea why everyone is so shocked. We all know that Oscar looooves the gays.
Rourke, whose performance in The Wrestler was both critically acclaimed and had won Golden Globe for it earlier in award season, might have only himself to blame for not completing his Phoenix-like assent from the scrap heap of failed careers in story book manner. Something tells me he is going to regret ever going on Larry King…
The thing most frustrating about the Academy is that while they might be right and whatever indie art film only the Academy members have seen might in fact be the best movie of the year, the fact that the public (nor their dollars) have any say into what is the best picture of the year. Though with Paul Blart: Mall Cop having been a raging success, my argument is notably weaker. Either way, for my money The Wrestler was the Best Picture of the Year, but it was depressing as Hell… unlike Slumdog, which while equally depressing at times, it has a groovy Bollywood dance number at the end which makes it all better.
