Rumors abound about new Star Wars movies...

george-lucasStar Wars and its creator, George Lucas, are again the subjects of internet rumor... rather exciting news to boot.

IESB has been running with a "strong rumor" that George Lucas has again been bit by the creativity bug and that he is again thinking about making a new set of Star Wars movies.

Specifically, IESB is claiming that while busy beginning the process to start converting the ix existing Star Wars movies into 3D, Lucas- motivated as much by the success of The Clone Wars animated series and Star Wars themed video games as he was by the wild success that Avatar had- has been openly pondering the creation of a new series of films for the beloved franchise.

lucas-showest_lLucasfilm was quick to deny the reports by IEBS (and other sources citing them), stating to Wired Magazine (via Lucasfilm spokesperson Josh Kushins):

"This is, of course, completely false.  George Lucas has plenty of projects to keep him busy right now- including plenty of Star Wars projects- but there are no new Star Wars feature films planned."

Preemptively, IESB made sure to list their credentials when it comes to their spies within Lucasfilm, claiming that they had accurately gave the first announcement of the PG-13 rating of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the first word of a live action Star Wars TV series as well as the Clone Wars animated series... all sourced to the same blabbermouth deep within the belly of the Grey Bearded beast's lair.

And besides... the rumors have nothing to do with current projects that Lucas has decided to tackle... just that the idea has come to him to tell a new story at some point in the future.

Fear leads to anger... Anger leads to hate...

lucas-headIESB sees things a little different that the Lucasfilm spokesperson (who in my mind looks just like the laughing rat Jabba the Hutt kept as a pet)...

See, they see it that right now all Lucas has in the juices flowing... he is remembering how much fun it is to be behind the camera telling a story...

And it is not like this has not happened before...

In the mid-nineties, while Lucas was touching up the original trilogy in order to rerelease them, he had started speaking-initially in hushed tones that somehow leaked to the press; in time, more openly and clearly- about his desire to make not only the three prequels but also three films set sometime after the fall of the Intergalactic Empire.

Is it so hard to see how it is possible for something like that to happen again?

Ideally, the roll out would go something like this:

George-Lucas-DisneyFinish converting the six existing films into 3D and release the (with Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace expected to be released in early 2012) and develop and launch the already announced live action (and much anticipated as it has been rumored within nerd circles for years now) Star Wars themed television show.  then, taking the scrooge Mcduck like vault of money the rereleases will bring in (again, much like he did with the original trilogy and the prequels) and use that to self finance the new films he intends to do (with the fist of them ideally coming out 18-24 months after Episode VI- Return of the Jedi to a primed and eager audience).

Makes perfect sense, right???

And the rumored premise of the new films sounds like something I think we could all get behind.

Set decades after the destruction of the second Deathstar and the demise of Emperor Palpatine's Intergalactic Empire, the rumored new series of films would feature all new characters not connected at all to the whole Skywalker story (which Lucas has previously claimed to have run its course) getting entangled in all new adventures in the star Wars universe we have already all grown to know and love.  The IESB spy claims that Lucas feels that by going so far away from the original movies, he wouldn't be as pigeon holed into trying to fit things into the already established canon as he was while doing the prequels- something Lucas has before said caused so many of the story hiccups in the prequel movies.

Hate leads to suffering...

For some reason, George Lucas and I have this weird abused wife thing going on...

empire-vader-beckons_lAs much as I think that the guy's mind comes up with at least seventeen different ways to separate his loyal fans from their hard eared money in order to support a product they most likely have seen a million times before and no doubt have at home (in both DVD and VHS), I also remember that that same evil tyrant brain that insists on strip-mining my childhood also created the movies that defined it... And it is for that reason that I am excited to see what comes next...

The Universe that George Lucas created in Star Wars  is full of amazing characters yet to be dreamed up just waiting for go on adventures yet to be determined... why end the story on Endor with the fall of the empire?  Why not show how the new republic came together... or where it went after the fall...

I have no issue with George Lucas releasing new movies from the star wars universe...

Just sick of his rereleasing the old ones...

But if Lucas is thinking new content- be it the video games (which I love...), or a TV show (be it cartoon or live action), or a new series of movies- then I am all in.

lucas-rapeAware I will most likely be disappointed and swear the death of George Lucas yet again (in fairness, I would have blown him after Revenge of the Sith, and would have settled for having him used as a wookie's fuck doll over death for Attack of the Clones)...

But all in none the less.
