New Tim Armstrong is "Quite Alright"...

tim-timebomb-its-quite-alright-e1352748087413Being a fan of a musician can sometimes be a hard thing…

You are going to have those good times… sure… the salad days when the songs are crisp, the sound is unique, and the energy is totally organic. And then you will have those other albums… the ones forgotten by everyone.

Follow a band long enough and they will produce it…. Pennywise has been doing that steady for the better part of five years now.

I have that sort of a relationship with Tim Armstrong.

I have been there for the good…

Rancid in its hey…. The Operation Ivy stuff, in all their strung out glory… That Jimmy Cliff disk he produced that sounded crisp (not to mention his work with Lars Friedriksen & the Bastards)

But then I was there for the ehhh as well…

FrontThat 2000 Rancid album that just sucked.

That solo album he did where every song sounded unlistenably the same.

And then there was that god awful Transplant phase where he did his damndest to make the world miss Fred Durst by letting his unlikable roadie friend Skinhead Rob share his gift of flow with an unappreciative world.

(Fun Fact: Skinhead Rob sold me a bag of very decent weed at the Warped Tour.)

So when I heard through the grapevine (what I in my moronic pothead brain have determined to call Rancid’s website and twitterfeed) that Tim Armstrong was again sewing his creative oats in a musical project that did not involve Matt Freedman and Lars Friedriksen, I became suspicious (but not enraged, as I saw Skinhead Rob or Travis Barker had nothing to do with it).

So I pressed play on the video tab (much like I’m sure you are about to do) and found myself pleasantly surprised.

Off on an upcoming record due to hit iTunes (December 11th, 2012 to be exact)... Tim Timebomb &Friends with “It’s Quite Alright”…

(if you like what you hear, go ahead and track through the rest of the songs. I lost about a half hour doing so myself…)

timarmstrong_by_kevin_winter1On the Hellcat Records site, Armstrong had this to say about the project and release:

“Tim Timebomb and Friends is a place for me to share with you some of my favorite songs that I’ve recorded with friends of mine. I’ve always enjoyed sharing music, whether I’m just sitting around playing acoustic guitar with my friends or breaking out old 45’s. I guess you could call me a music nerd. I like everything from Bob Dylan to the Ramones, to Jimmy Cliff to Cock Sparrer. I plan to bring together a great group of players to record covers as well as some originals. I hope you dig it and encourage you to pass them on.”
