Our date: 1994.

A lot of shit passes for love songs on the radio these days.  Sappy lyrics sung along to a repetitive drum machine beat which sounds suspiciously like the song which aired just minutes before.  Not like the love songs of my day, with their dark poetic lyrics hauntingly sung along to melodic dreamy guitars.

God I love the 90s!

So set the Wayback Machine to 1994, Sherman... Our target: the psychedelic melodies of Mazzy Star...

Mazzy Star, "Fade into You"

The year was 1994.  I had been seeing this chick named Laura when my parents, in order to be spared from the coming apocalypse, moved our family deep into central Florida.  The strain of the long distance was too much for our young love and within a week Laura was on the arm of the starting JV quarterback. Heartbroken, I sent her four mix tapes, each of them closing with this Mazzy Star hit.

I can still recall her father's voice when he called to not so nicely request that I please not contact his daughter ever again.

Ahhh... young love...
