Weird Al Vs. Lady Gaga (or I have too much free time)

al-yankovicIt seems fitting to me in some cosmic way that on the unofficial Marijuana Smoker’s holiday I spent damn near all of it burning real calories trying to wrap my mind around this whole Lady Gaga/”Weird” Al Yankovic hullabaloo over a parody the legendary funny man had put together.

At around mid-day (or blunt number two, for those of you keeping a score card), the social network-verse (a new word I am trying to coin…) was all a flutter over rumors lady-gaga-150x150that Lady Gaga had denied “Weird” Al permission to put a parody of her hit single “Born This Way” on his new up and coming single.

Upon being rejected, Al (best known for his beloved parodies of the classic hits of the 80s and 90s, especially Michael Jackson) threw the single on the YouTube, claiming that Gaga had denied him the ability to put the single on his new album (an album where the proceeds were going to go to charity I might add).

Why not give the song a listen…

Now, here’s where things start getting a bit odd…

Al didn’t leave his earth scorching to just the “release” of the parody on the YouTube…

He tandemed that with a scathing blog post at his website where he detailed the whole process of the song, ending (of course) with the sad news that her Gaganess had denied the usage of the song (something Al really didn’t need in order to use the song but claims he likes to have the blessing of his parody subjects in order to keep things on the up and up).

Lady-Gaga-Judas-300x300As with everything involving our new instant message world, it took no time at all for this snafu to go global; the whole world a-tizzy with gossip as the most beloved pop singer in the country [for now] (who was already stirring the shit with the Catholic Leagues allegations that her latest track [“Judas”] was a slam against the Catholics at Easter time) finding herself in a pissing match with one of the great song parody men of our lifetimes…

This is not where Gaga wanted to be…

After a few quick public relation moves by her people (who fell on the sword for Mother Gaga) , a 4/20 miracle happened as Al got the permission he was looking for to try and sell a song he already had to give away as Lady Gaga buckled to the public outcry in favor of Al.

Conspiracy Theories…

This story really had my mind going in a million different directions…

Going into it, I wasn’t shocked that Lady Gaga had told “Weird” Al to go pound sand with his lame parody.

Sure the guy is a living legend but seriously… this isn’t 1986.

Who the hell is beating a trail to make sure they are first in line to pick up the latest sampling from “Weird” Al… Give me his name (as there is no fucking way that there is more than one of these guys in any given area)…

Combine the irrelevance of the Weird one with a modern audience with the fact that Lady Gaga (and her sycophantic fans) are all taking this whole “Born this Way” lady_gaga-is-a-motorbikeagenda she is working the fuck out of very serious (remember folks, she isn’t a gay activist by constantly working “Born this Way” into every freaking conversation she finds herself in… she is just a carnie trying to move digital downloads, album presales, and concert tickets).  I’m sure at some level, Gaga was disgusted that anyone (let alone ten years too late Al) would dare take her masterpiece of acceptance and self-esteem and turn it into something cheap and common.

So the idea of self-important Gaga telling the funny man to take his dated shtick and go kick rocks didn’t come as a total shock.

But as the word started coming out of Gaga’s camp that Mother Gaga herself never said no to the parody… that she had never heard it… how she loves Al and was honored to hear that he was going to cover one of her silly dance songs… a second, more insidious thought came into my mind…

Now what if Al, an artist who really hasn’t been relevant in any mass appeal sort of way for nearly a decade, figured that the easiest way for him to try and get a little heat was to attach himself to the biggest and brightest star he could find.

s-LADY-GAGA-largeEnter Lady Gaga…

It would only make sense for him to do a cover of Lady Gaga.

She is white hot these days!

Put it out there that she made a cunty move and got a little strong with Al (a man making money in this game longer than Lady Gaga has been taking in air), let some of that good will the usually controversy free Yankovic has earned for himself throughout the years to come in handy in a PR skirmish against the pop whatever she is…

In the end, no one would get hurt: Al would get his name (not to mention his new single) out there amongst the people…  Lady Gaga would be able to retain her street cred with her loyal fans by not approving the release of the shitty song yet not shitting on a beloved artist like “Weird” Al (not to mention taking a few eyes away from that group of zealots bitching and moaning that the pop star isn’t caring enough about what they believe in… ya know, because those Catholics do such a great job making sure they always take into account the feelings of those they do not see eye to eye with…).

It’s a win, win!

God don’t make trash (but Al might have…)

As much fun as it is to live in the world of conspiracy, we all know what happened…

Lady Gaga gave Al’s “I Perform This Way” a listen and really didn’t like it…

Not because she takes herself or her song too serious…

But because it was pure and utter shit.

End of story.
