Day 3: First song that made my parents cool...

jethro_tullThere really was not a whole lot of "COOLNESS" oozing out of my parent's home stereo.

Granted, most of the time that it spent on it was belting out some god awful Spanish pop disco track or some hideous American disco track.

And for whatever reason, my father got lumped into having the same shitty musical taste as my mother.

This is what I thought until I was about 14 or so and decided to start going through my parents records (I believe I was doing so looking for a Bruce Springsteen record I distinctly remembered listening to as a child). And that's when I found them...

My father's records.

At first it was nothing really too shocking... a few Beatles LPs, a couple of Stones LPs, and a few other popular acts of his day...

But then I came across something I had never heard of before...

Jethro Tull.

It intrigued me... a band named Jethro Tull that contained no man named Jethro but did claim within its ranks a man playing the flute.

What got me more was that I had never ever heard of this band...

I had heard of the other acts he had in his collection: KISS, Led Zepplin, Van Halen...

So I decided to ask my old man about it.

"Hey dad, who is Jethro Tull?"

His eyes got wide, as though he had waited years to have this question asked.

aqualung-1He ran to the record player and slapped upon it his flawless copy of Aqualung and introduced his son to absolute greatness that is Tull.

From there, the bunny hole that was my father's odd collection of music began being steadily introduced to the household. Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, Rod Stewart and Faces and (perhaps the most influential upon my life of all the musicians my father introduced me to) Mr. David Bowie all became part of the soundtrack to my life, dulling out the pained shrieks of Donna Summers and the Bee Gees.

And all because of the mind altering powers of jazz flute...

Here's Jethro Tull, "Aqualung".
