mmbwThere are always trends within music that most of us would rather forget happened…

Kind of like how the Germans seem to ignore a whole decade of their history (roughly 1932-1945 or so), so too is it with the various generations and some of their more questionable musical tastes.

For my mother, there were certain moments in her disco stage that she would rather leave to the ether of time (I’m sure none of us would like to have a memory of oneself busting a move to “Disco Duck)…

My aunt, a particularly odd double play of sexual persuasion confusion (it’s one thing to carry a torch during the 80’s for George “blowing every man he can find behind a bush” Michael, but to follow it up by closing out the 90’s pining for Ricky “Not fooling anyone” Martin) leading her to religiously enjoy less than stellar music for no other reason that a piss poor gay-dar…

And for me, it was the manic rantings of Eminem.

For three entire albums, the blonde headed virtuoso treated the world to a snapshot of his deranged existence…

His warped relationship with his baby momma…

His warped relationship with his actual momma…

And his strained relationship with the rest of the world…

For a while it was fun- the chainsaws and screaming and vomiting sounds.

eminem-puke-a-sBut, much like how for like three weeks in ’95 we all thought “Rollin’” was going to be the next “Stairway to Heaven”, it is something that is left to then… a specter of a time and place long gone…

That for whatever reason my wife insists on making sure I relive over and over and over and over and over the second I get into her car; the agony about the musical selections made exponentially worse due to her preference to some of his deeper cuts as opposed to the hits (or that she will listen to this nonsense, but for some reason Jay-Z is too hardcore for her oh so delicate ears…)
