Eric Roberts joins Celeb Rehab...

Eric1Looks like Dr. Drew got himself the “big name’ he needed t sell the next season of VH-1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew

Eric Roberts.

That’s right…

Eric Roberts (who just showed the world he is still alive in a very big way with his critically acclaimed performance in The Dark Knight) has announced that he has joined the train wreck reality show in order to help clean up his life.

His issue????

marijuanaMarijuana use.

A rep for the Runaway Train stars confirmed to E! News that the actor has indeed checked into the Pasadena Recovery Center to shoot Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.  But the rep also did something weird in downplaying the severity of his addiction.

"It is NOT for any serious drug/substance, or prescription drug abuse problem," reads the statement. "Eric wishes to express his genuine thanks for the concern for his well being, and appreciates the support of his family, friends and fans."

celeb-rehabAnd if not to deal with some serious life debilitating addiction issue, the question “Why check into rehab if you are not really suffering from a debilitating addiction” begs to be asked.

Ever suck dick for pot???

So far, this whole “gong to rehab” move by Roberts stinks of publicity stunt.

I mean come on…

B-List actor who recently reminded the world he still existed turns up on a rehab show to kick a bad habit yet publicly claims that he suffers from no serious addictions…

Maybe we need more info for this to make sense.

In a statement to E! News, Eliza Roberts (the actor’s wife) had this to say:

bong-pot"Eric quit drugs and alcohol in 1995, He has no interest in anything, other than marijuana… He uses marijuana as a medication. He has a prescription," Eliza explains. "However, a dependency is a dependency and he doesn't want to be dependent on it anymore."

Eliza also explained that her husband had previously tried prescription medications to treat anxiety, but they simply didn't agree with him, and so he turned to cannabis for a cure (which, I might add, seemed to do the trick…).

Drugs are bad, m’kay…

Don’t get me wrong…

0a_marijuana_not_for_hippiesPot is not for everyone.  And, as every pothead out there knows, sometimes you do have to take a bit of a weed break (if for nothing more than keeping tolerance levels in check).

But to have to check yourself into rehab to stop smoking pot is a tad bit making it all about you.  I mean seriously… every year, millions of pot smokers quit the good green.  It’s called “graduating from college”.

And while usually I would look at a story like this as nothing more than just the efforts of an irrelevant actor trying to get his face and name on the minds of players in LaLa Land, for some reason this story strikes me as a tad bit deeper… We know why Roberts would put himself through this… why would Drew do it though…

For Dr. Drew, this move to bring in a non-addict to clean up makes total sense.

It not only allows him to keep his bullshit reality treatment show where no one (except Steven Adler) ever gets better to stay on the majik box for another season, but it allows his the forum to speak with authority on the matter of his anti-marijuana crusade.

dr-drew-courtesy-vh1Throughout his career as a (very well known) addiction treatment specialist, Dr. Drew Pinsky has had some not so nice things to say about marijuana usage…

“I think that’s the big issue, because of the potency of the drug, just as we increase, say… we create a… people seem to understand that when we create a drug like OxyContin with higher [?], more powerful — “Oh, OK, that’s more addictive” — but somehow the marijuana story flies under the radar, that we’re producing a drug that is increasingly powerful and thereby increasingly addictive …and it’s also increasingly dangerous in terms of the side effects. We’re seeing lots more problem with depression – I know you and I did a conference about that – we’re even seeing schizophreniform reactions. The one thing that I’m sort of fascinated by, you know, is that for many people there seems to be a very powerful opiate-like effect of marijuana these days in these very high potencies. Is anyone reporting anything about that?"

And…

“… It’s interesting that when I treat people for multiple substances – cocaine, alcohol, and pot – the one they really miss is the pot. It creates sort of a… the euphoria from the drug creates sort of a love-type reaction – they love the drug – it’s a nurturing sort of warm feeling they can’t get any other way. And so when they are left without the drug there may be some outside withdrawal, their affect may be stabilizing, but they still miss and romanticize that feeling…”

**quotes taken from this interview, though I have heard him say similar things to the same effect in other interviews…

What were we talkin’ about…

Dr Drew WEB 509bWe could go on all day arguing the semantics of a physical addiction as opposed to a psychological dependence, the idea that humans find intense comfort in the familiar and in ritual, the fact that there is very few honest studies done on marijuana and its effects on the mind and body (other than the sketchy studies done by government funded scientists looking to support highly questioned government policy), or whether or not a man who makes a living treating people with dependence issues coming out claiming that a drug used by millions of people with nary a problem (either health or mental) is as much truth as it is a conflict of interest… but what would be the point…

Much like assholes, we all have our opinions and when it comes to marijuana, Dr. Drew’s opinion on the subject stinks just as much as everyone else’s.

But he is entitled to it, just as I am entitled to mine.

For those of you looking to get deeper into the views of Dr. Drew on the subject of marijuana use (as well as other addictive substances), please to be checking out his latest season of Celebrity Rehab, fixing to launch sometime this fall on VH-1 featuring Eric Roberts, Jeremy London, and coke whore Janice Dickenson.

I can tell you from experience, after a few deep lungers it makes for some fine “Veg Time”…
