Media outlets all over the world (like this one) are reporting that the US Navy is sending one of thier ships to intercept as North Korean flagged ship, currently in Chinese waters, believed to be illegally transporting banned weapons in and out of North Korea.
The USS John McCain has been given the mission of locating and monitoring the ship Kang Nam. Once located, the Navy vessel may seek permission to board and search the ship the second it makes its way into international waters due to believed violations of UN sanctions. It is believes that the ship, allegedly heading to port in Shanghai, is involved in the proliferation of weapons material for the North Korean government.
for years now, the North Korean government (lead by thier Fearless Leader, the pot bellied Kim Jong Ill) have been a thorn in the side of the International Community due to it's pursuit of nuclear weapons. Last week, the United Nations authorized the navies of the world (read the US Navy) to strictly enforce compliance to the sanctions imposed as a punishment for North Korea's continued efforts in attaining a nuclear weapon (including recently confirmed nuclear tests and rocket launches).
While the White House has been relatively quiet over the matter, the North Korean government has publicly vowed that any attempt to board the ship would be interpreted as an "Act of War" and that retribution would be "100 to 1000 fold".
The Kang Nam is a ship known in those waters to be transporting contraband weapons and materials. An unnamed US official reportedly told Fox News that "North Korea does not export anything other than weapons. And this ship is presumed to be carrying something illicit given its past history." That past history includes being found to have contraband on board after being searched in a Hong Kong port in October of 2006.
News of the marked vessel comes at a horrible time for American and North Korean relations, coming on the heels of a Japanese news report that North Korea intends to test one of its rockets by launching it in Hawaii's direction 'just to see if it would get there..."
When asked about the recent actions of the North Korean government, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates claimed that the US military is monitoring the situations with North Korea very closely. While he [Gates] expressed concern over the reported threats to launch a missile at Hawaii, Sec. Gates expressed confidence in the American military's readiness to deal with the situation, adding that the Theater High Altitude Area Defense missile defense system has been deployed to the area to insure the safety of the American state.
"The ground-based interceptors are clearly in a position to take action. So, without telegraphing what we will do, I would just say ... I think we are in a good position, should it become necessary, to protect the American territory."
With Iran on the brink of civil war (or at least a continually bloody move by the Ahmadinejad run government to consolidate power and silence his critics), these recent moves by North Korea only amplify the chilling words of Joe Biden...
"It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."
It's been about six months (almost to the day to be exact) and lookie lookie... here's the test ol' "Foot in the Mouth" Joe had predicted.
And as the shit starts to not just hit the fan but splatter on the wall behind it, I really do hope that those who would do America harm do find Obama to have a spine of steel. I really truly hope that they do. Because unlike the former enemies of American, Iran, north Korea, and whoever the puppet master pulling thier strings (because either country would be suicidal to try and engage American in any sort of aggressive action) are bat shit insane and after damn near a decade of talking something tells me that there is little if anything to say.
