The Iranian government has had eight staffers from the British Embassy arrested today. The Iranian government backed Press TV is reporting that eight local (as in Tehran) British embassy staffers have been taken into custody regarding their involvement in the civil unrest that went on after the contested presidential results last week.
This moves by the Iranian government is the latest in weeks worth of insults being lashed out on the British government. Last week, British diplomats in Tehran were expelled (due to allegations they had had some involvement with the unrest as well). The British government answered back by sending two Iranian envoys home as well. Since that move, Iran has recalled its ambassador to London, and has publicly stated that it is rethinking its diplomatic ties with the British (both of which are pretty big deals in international circles).
In response to the arrests, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband stated that Iran's actions were "harassment and intimidation of a kind which is quite unacceptable," going on to say that "... The idea that the British embassy is somehow behind the demonstrations and protests that have been taking place in Tehran in recent weeks is wholly without foundation."
With many nations in the world already looking at the actions of Iran with concern over global stability, these recent actions by the anti-Western régime of the Iranian government is giving many nations a reason to monitor the situation with concern.
And to think... when that dummie Dubya told us Iran was the next greatest threat to the world as we know it, we all laughed...
