Scientology convicted of fraud in France...

 scientology-cross

French courts have convicted the Church of Scientology of fraud and came within a "C" hair of banning the religion all together.  The ruling stems from a case brought forth by two women who accused the Church and it's bookstore of manipulating them into spending tens of thousands of Euros in Products and services.

One of the women claims that the Church swindled her into buying all sorts of gizmos (like the electromagnetic machine that tells you how scientology_electrometermany evil alien souls you have in you) while the other claimed that her employer, a Scientologist, insisted that she take classes within the Church and dismissed her when she eventually refused.  In its defense, the Church claims that they did no such mental manipulation on the two women.  The Court did not see it the Church's way, fining the Scientologist Celebrity Center and Bookstore 900,000 Euros as well as hitting the Church's French leader, Alain Rosenberg, with a two year suspended jail sentence and a fine of 3000o Euros.

Ouch...

But it could have been worse...

France does not accept the Church of Scientology as a religion (it sees it like a sect or cult) thus making it capable for the French government to out and out ban the Faith all together.  If it had not been a change made to a law (conveniently enough on the exact day the trail began...) striping French courts of a right they once held to ban and outlaw organizations and sects that they convicted of fraud.

Had it not been for this law change, the Courts could have (and most likely would have) outlawed the church of Scientology, making it illegal to operate in France.

When the French take action against anything it kind of makes you wonder just how fucked whatever has them all wound up really is...

But then again...

hitlerThe last time a European country took issue with a religion, the Holocaust happened...

And as appealing as the idea of Tom Cruise and John Travolta behind razor wire might be, the persecution of any religion (even the ones that pray to a Alien tyrant coming soon to take over our world again...) is wrong and something we as Americans should stand against.
