Man has a hundred years left...

end-of-the-worldWhat would you say if I told you that Human Beings have a shelf life of just about a hundred years or so before we are totally wiped off the face of the Earth...

Probably after a boisterous fit of belly laughs, you might be tempted to ask me what manner of mad man told me such nonsense that I saw it fit to repeat it with such conviction.

Then what if I told you that these words were not the offshoot of some THC inspired hallucination or the babblings of an old fool but rather the studious results of a learned man's hard work...

What do you say then...

A really inconvenient truth...

frank-fennerEveryone... meet Professor Frank Fenner, noted professor of microbiology at the Australian National University and the man who helped eradicate smallpox.

He is also the guy dooming our species.

"Homo sapiens will become extinct, perhaps within 100 years...  It's an irreversible situation."

The 95 year old Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Royal Society is as sure as to the "Impending Doom" of Man as he is the hand Fate will use to bring it- Global Climate Change.

overpopulationProf. Fenner's predictions are based on a belief that humans will not be able to survive an impending population explosion, arguing that since the industrial revolution, we have been increasing our expenditure of natural resources. And he believes the human race is now at tipping point.

And Fenner might have some facts to back that belief up.

According to last year's United Nation's numbers, there are 6.89 billion people currently calling the Earth "HOME", with numbers expected to top 7 billion by late next year.

This ever rising population, combined with the ever increasing scarcity of natural resources and the looming threat of Global Climate Change harming both our habitats and food supplies would surely prove to be fitting means to the end of Man's run "on top” alone... but in tandem?  Or worse concurrent???

It could be too much for our ever softening species to stomach...

easter-island-statues'We'll undergo the same fate as the people on Easter Island. Climate change is just at the very beginning. But we're seeing remarkable changes in the weather already.  The Aborigines showed that without science and the production of carbon dioxide and global warming, they could survive for 40,000 or 50,000 years. But the world can't. The human species is likely to go the same way as many of the species that we've seen disappear.'

The End is Near...

It would be easy to dismiss the words of Prof. Fenner as just the over thought observations of a feeble old man if it wasn't a prediction that just keeps being echoed...

prince-charlesLast week, Prince Charles made a similar claim- warning of monumental global problems if the population continued to grow unfettered.

Professor Nicholas Boyle of Cambridge University said that a 'Doomsday' moment will take place in 2014 - and will determine whether the 21st century is full of violence and poverty or will be peaceful and prosperous shortly before that.

(He went on to also note that every century for the last five hundred years has been marked by a cataclysmic "Great Event")

In 2006, another noted academic- James Lovelock- warned that the world's population may sink as low as 500 million over the next century due to global warming.

Leaves you feeling kind of lost and hopeless, don't it...

the_fatesEspecially when to a man, all of these eggheads seem to say that the efforts to curb or curtail climate change will do nothing to reverse the hands of Fate.

To quote Bob Dylan:

The Die, it is drawn; the Curse, it is cast...

We All Die; It's How We Face It that Matters...

global_warmingmatchIt is all kind of hopeless, ain't it...

Less than a hundred years (hard suffering ones at that) left before our great Human civilization is reduced to a few breeding pairs of Eskimos hanging out in the Arctic.

You would want to believe such predictions to be bullshit- the panicked cries of control minded zealots.

But as the constant barrage of tragedy this year- from the Earth caused Haitian Earthquake to the man caused Gulf Oil Disaster- one can't help but wonder if this really is it...
