The music, the movements, the feeling MAAAAAN… it was like a constant echo of parents tooting their own horns over the greatness of their lives…
The friends buried in Southeast Asia, the social changes fostered by the late 60s, and the expansion of the empire upon our victory over the Reds in the Cold War… All I heard growing up was about the fucking greatness produced by the offspring of the so called “Greatest Generation “.
Yet here we are at the onset of perhaps the greatest moment of their time to show off that world renown gutsy ability to do what’s right despite the pains brought to itself because of it… the moment where the idealistic promise made to their father’s is beginning to show that it is going to very much adversely affect the economic lives of their sons… and all these newly silvered foxes can do is run to the high ground of political threats and stern reminders that a bankrupt system seems to owe them something.
Check out this threatening ad by those civic minded folks at the AARP letting Washington and their grandchildren know that they will not go off into that good night without a fight should any of the economic repairs in Washington include any sort of cuts or changes to the known to be failing Social Security System...
The Eskimos might have had a point with that whole Ice float thing…
For as long as I can remember, I have been told to not count on social security because it will not be a solvent system by the time I am eligible to take advantage of it.
What always struck me off about that concept- the fact that I was being told since I was a young adult in my mid-teens that a governmental system known by everyone to be doomed to insolvency that will not be fixed by the time the fifty years goes necessary for it to be my turn to get something from it. I wondered why it would not be fixed… why it would just be allowed to crumble.
But as time passed, I saw the why…
Because my parents and grandparents are a bunch of selfish motherfuckers.
A known government Ponzi scheme (in where you kick up an investment sum of money in the expectation of getting a greater return upon it at a later date- say when you retire…), Social Security has been in dire need of repair for decades now (the argument to do so always being poised that by 2030 all the baby boomers will be retiring and there will not be enough employed people in the generations below them to support the care of both the parents and the grandparents). But it never gets the repairs it needs as it is known (rather openly in fact) that Social Security (as well as Medicaid) are a political “third rail”- a politician killer.
Any time there is an effort made to try and fix the mess that is Social Security, there is a serious backlash against such politicians by the AARP and other elderly geared groups intent on making sure that the benefits of their 50 million members (all who are regular voters I might add) are never even considered to be brought into conversation of budget cuts.
And what makes it worse is that we all know for a fact that this happens.
We know that the old folks groups are powerful PACs and that typically what they say tends to go in certain regards. We see it come to life every couple of years or so whenever some ambitious politician decided to do the right thing for those folks under forty smart enough to see that the system as it stands is a doomed to fail trap… watch this political monolith with a bad hip and a little bit of a hearing issue coming stirring to life; it’s crackling bones and raspy voice being a mulitvoiced singular chant reminding all willing to listen about promises made and sacrifices delivered.
And we know that nothing will be done.
Not one fucking thing.
This abomination of a governmental program will continue to drag along; it’s green alien blood kept pumping by government officials on a borrowing frenzy scared shitless into compliance.
It just is.
