Majority of Americans favor freeing the weed...

medical-marijuana1It seems as though there has been nothing but shitty news to report on as of late…

Protests, crumbling economies, an impotent president, and a Congress openly paying both sides against the Middle…

But today I bring you good news…

Gallup has released a poll claiming that a record 50% of Americans now support the legalization and taxation of marijuana (the poll also found that 46% of Americans are not in favor of legalizing marijuana).

When Gallup first asked about legalizing marijuana, in 1969, 12% of Americans favored it, while 84% were opposed. Support remained in the mid-20s in Gallup measures from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, but has crept up since, passing 30% in 2000 and 40% in 2009 before reaching the 50% level in this year's Oct. 6-9 annual Crime survey.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, "Marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States." The National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2009 found that "16.7 million Americans aged 12 or older used marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed, an increase over the rates reported in all years between 2002 and 2008."

Fo’ every high there is a low…

legalize-itBut, as with everything else in life, this cloud too brings with it a stormy side…

While the path towards legalization looks clearer than ever, a grey haired barrier stands before the funky green and legitimacy in the eyes of the Law…

Of all demographic groups, the elderly (those 65 years of age and older) came out the strongest against legalization (to the tune of 69%), which neutralizes any appeal that such popularity would have had on politicians eager to garner coveted youth and male votes (women also tended to come out against the herb) with the high turnout percentage the 65+ crowd.

The findings of the poll come at a time where the Obama Administration (who have spent much of their term sheildin Office with it being said that they are governing against the Will of the People) has turned a more steely focus on the Medicinal Marijuana dispensaries of California and Colorado (an issue that Gallup has found as many as 70% of Americans favored).

Personally, while I do favor the usage of marijuana in many medicinal cases, I do not feel that the solution to this whole marijuana issue isn’t going the medicinal route but rather seeking the out and out legalization and taxation of the crop (while allowing the various states to decide if they want to allow it, much like they do with alcohol…

Always has been and always will be…
