Man questions the Zombie readiness of his town...

shaun_of_the_dead_trio_Lego_Zombie_Apocalypse-s500x333-128054-535A concerned citizen from the English city of Leicester asked his local city council a question none of its members would have ever thought would be asked of them…

Are they ready for Zombies?

Robert Ainsley, the concerned Leicesterian befuddled his local government by asking them an odd question during Tuesday’s City Council Meeting:

"Can you please let us know what provisions you have in place in the event of a zombie invasion?"

He added, I assume to prove to them and all in attendance that this wasn’t the wonderings of an overly imaginative idiot but rather the well thought and reasoned query of a learned man: "Having watched several films it is clear that preparation for such an event is poor and one that councils throughout the kingdom must prepare for."

And here we were all worried that the deep social relevance of Doomsday would be lost due to the film’s poor box office performance…

near-zombie apocalypseAs of yet, there has been no formal reply to the man’s question by the city government (something they are required by law to do under the Kingdom’s Freedom of Information Act laws) but during a radio interview with the BBC the municipality’s head of the information governance department- a Ms. Lynn Wyeth- gave this response to the question:

"We've had a few wacky ones but this one did make us laugh…

It's one of those questions that you could do a one-liner saying there is nothing specifically in the emergency plan to state a response to a zombie invasion.  But you could look at it in more depth and say “Which parts of the emergency plan could you apply to a zombie invasion?” - as it would have the same impact as perhaps some other disaster or attack.  If it's specifically about zombies then I would say, from my recollection of the plan... then unfortunately there's nothing in there... saying how we would respond to zombies…

To you it might seem frivolous and a waste of time... but to different people it actually means something."

Uuuuuuuugh… Brains….

I really do not see where the silliness of this question is…

It would only make sense for any group- from something as small as a family to something as large as an entire city- to have drawn up contingency plans for a myriad of situations that may arise.

Hurricanes, Earthquake, race riots, terrorist attacks, and even such situations that the public might find a bit silly to have taken the time to seriously consider (such as UFO landing and Zombie Apocalypse) are all situations that could be made exponentially more catastrophic if combined with a lack of preparation upon being confronted with it.

And it’s not like zombie apocalypse is really that far out a concept…

zombie-dt-431x300While the vision of legions of the undead rising from their crypts in order to walk the Earth craving the brains and blood of the living for all time is an idea we can all relegate without nary a second thought to the realm of science fiction, the thought of a virus (perhaps natural but most likely the product of bioengineering) being unleashed upon a population with turns the locality into a pack of crazed man-animals unleashing holy fury on anything they come across isn’t all that far out a concept to imagine. We know for a fact our government spends tens of millions every year coming up with all sorts of horrific ways to kill as many humans as possible in as short a time allowable…

And (say what you will about us) we are the Good Guys…  Just think of what everyone else is up to!

And if we have learned anything watching television for the past few years now it has been that Governments- despite all the faith we seem to love to put in them- are staggeringly underprepared (if prepared at all) for any sort of emergency.

not-possible-zombie-apocalypse

New Orleans… Chile… Haiti… those poor bastards in the American Midwest God tried to make disappear via mile wide tornados… the list goes on and on of prime examples of governments dropping the ball when it comes to that “Emergency Management” they keep telling us that we will be happy to have at our disposal once the time comes (God forbid) that we need it.

Yet no one ever seems to be…

So keep laughing at the guy trying to make sure that local governments are on their toes when it comes to emergency preparations (even one as “silly” as Zombie Apocalypse)… When you are in an refuge tent sipping hot soup while listening to some bureaucrat tell you he has no idea why your neighbors are ripping each other apart in a rabid fracas as opposed to being stuck in that Hell you will be glad he did.
