For years now people have been claiming that the American university system had been becoming soft, allowing students to major in bullshit courses of study, guaranteeing them a life of poverty and delivering to the American economy a generations of unemployable art, philosophy, history, and literature majors.
Now Professor Philip Hasely wants it to be so.
I give you ladies and gentlemen a degree in UFO-logy...
"It's about time we looked into this as a worthy area of study. It's important that the whole subject be brought out in the open and investigated," states Prof. Hasely, an anthropology professor at the Niagara County community college in New York.
In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that when not busy teaching students Hasely heads the Western New York Mutual UFO Network (WNYMUFON), an organization focused on good UFO research.
"To say we are UFO believers basically implies we are taking this on faith, and that's not the case. There's plenty of evidence. We have to deal with skeptics like any other UFO organization, and we are perfectly willing to be critiqued. We know people who think this is a nonsense subject. And we'll refer you to voluminous literature and facts about UFOs."
Hasely's group, the WNYMUFON, claims that all of their UFO evidence has been gathered in a serious scientific manner by their field investigators and using equipment like radar, astronomy, and meteorology. No word as to whether or not tin foil hats are also used (ya know... to keep our alien masters out of our minds...).
Now I believe in UFOs as much as the next tin foil hat wearing jerk out there, to for some reason the idea of a college degree in UFO-logy seems a little preposterous to me. Yes, Professor Haely is right... there i alot of serious evidence out there that main stream scientists might want to take a good long (serious) look at. But is that evidence enough to build a course of study on the matter???Credible sightings are happening all over the world all of the time, and for whatever reason the governments of the world seem intent on disregarding the data of these strange happenings- with many Western nations going so far as to completely ignoring the matter. So for a scientist of any merit to be calling for a serious academic look into the happenings is a refreshing thing. But for a whole course of study on the issue is a bit much.
