Google may have found Lost City of Atlantis...

atlantiscityWell I will be damned... I guess you find everything with Google...

After centuries of debate as to whether or not it really exists-let alone as to its exact location-archaeologists believe that they may have located the lost city of Atlantis using Google Oceans.

A network of criss-cross lines is 620 miles off the coast of North West Africa near the Canary Islands on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.  The perfect rectangle – which is around the size of Wales – was noticed on the search giant's underwater exploration tool by an aeronautical engineer who claims it looks like an "aerial map" of a city. The underwater image can be found at the co-ordinates 31 15'15.53N 24 15'30.53W.

The unexplained underwater grid, located just off the western coast of Africa, is in one of the locations ancient historians believe that the legendary lost city (first described by ancient Greek philosopher Plato) could have been located.

'The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato," said Atlantis expert and curator for ancient history at New York State University Dr. Charles Orser.  "Even if it turns out to be geographical, it definitely deserves a closer look."

The legend of Atlantis is almost as old as modern man's time on Earth.

atlantis_end_2First described by Plato in the Timaeus and the Critias, Atlantis is said to be an island "larger than Libya and Asia put together" in front of the Pillars of Hercules - the Straits of Gibraltar. He said Atlantis was a land of fabulous wealth, advanced civilization and natural beauty destroyed by earthquakes and floods 9,000 years earlier after a desperate effort made by its citizens to conquer Athens (around 9000 BCE).

Atlantis is also briefly mentioned in the ancient historical writings of the Egyptians and the Phoenicians.

In recent years "evidence" of the lost kingdom has been found off the coast of Cyprus and in southern Spain.

As for this most recent find...

I punched in the coordinates listed in the article and was rather surprised to actually see the intricate rectangular grid that all these Atlantis experts are high fiving themselves over (You should try it for yourself...).

But the question remains...

Is this whatever it is the lost city of Atlantis???  Or perhaps a different lost city (there are also rumors of it being the lost kingdom of Lemuria, a contemporary/competitor of Atlantis)??

Until we get a crew out there we will never know...
