I have no idea who would be shocked by this news...
Courtney Love, celebrity junkie and widowed wife of grunge rock god Kurt Cobain has lost custody of her 17 year old daughter, Francis Bean Cobain. Apparently Francis would rather live with her grandmother.
Word broke Monday that Courtney Love has had her parental rights stripped, with full custody of her daughter being awarded to the child's grandmother (and Kurt Cobain's mom) Wendy O'Connor, and her father's aunt, Kimberly Dawn Cobain.
No reasons have been given publicly for the move by either camp. Geraldine Wilde, attorney for Francis Bean and her two guardians, is calling the ruling a "private family matter".
Keith A. Fink (side note: isn't this the greatest name for a lawyer ever???), attorney for Courtney Love did not give much more insight on the matter, but did assure the world that the removal of custody had nothing to do with Love's near legendary drug abuse history:
"Courtney's been clean for years and is perfectly fine. This is simply about Frances preferring to live with her grandmother at this time. Frances is 17 and a strong-willed child, and this is a decision she made on her own. No matter what, Courtney loves her daughter more than anything in the world."
The current custody ruling grants Cobain and O'Connor guardianship over the girl until next Febuary, but does not grant the two access to the trust in Francis' name established after her father's 1994 suicide.
This is not the first time that Love has lost custody of her daughter. In 2003, the courts awarded custody of Francis Bean to her grandmother following Love's drug overdose and subsequent arrest on drug charges. Love won back custody of her daughter in 2005.
