Thomas Jane brings back The Punisher...

punisherWhile Marvel and DC spent their Comic Con announcing the various new (and rehashed) superhero titles that we can be expecting to come to theaters near us within the next year or two, perhaps the biggest buzz about the exploits of a superhero on the silver screen came from out of nowhere…

It came from Thomas Jane.

In a self-professed labor of love, 2004 ‘s version of The Punisher (a Marvel title, but this release it has nothing to do with the company) made himself a fan film bringing his version of the character back to stunning life. (Also, keep an eye out for the greatness that in Ron Pearlman making a nice cameo.)

Check out what I feel might be the best comic book movie you will not see this year, The Punisher: Dirty Laundry…

Difference between Justice & Punishment

janeIntended to bridge (we presume) the “bent on vengeance for the death of his loved ones” Jane Punisher and the ultra-violent one man criminal extermination squad Ray Stevenson’s 2008 embodiment of the character (which was a noble effort by Stevenson in bringing the character to life despite the movie eating a bag of dicks), the film is perhaps the best reason yet to make another Punisher movie.

And if it is this Punisher, it might be worth the gamble.

If we have learned anything from the Nolan Batman series, it is that the movie going public will “get” a reality based travoltasuperhero movie so long as the script makes sense and the acting is solid.

Jane brought that to his Punisher movie (a watchable movie despite the efforts of John Travolta to ham that movie up), something that the 2008 version of the character was lacking.

There is a singular mindedness to the character of the Punisher; to that there is no denial. Frank Castle is a man with nothing more in him than a deep desire to punish those in need of punishment. But Jane’s Punisher brought forth a slight reluctance to the character… a humanity that was lacking from the Stevenson portrayal, though not for anything he was doing, mind you. That is apparently what the studio wanted because they felt that is what we expect of the Punisher, thinking that we are too stupid to understand that The Punisher isn’t a cap and powers kind of superhero.

And that makes no sense to me…

jane-punisherPerhaps that might have been the case the near decade ago, when Jane turned down the rewritten a dozen times before being brought to wheezing life Punisher: War Zone, but after the tremendous success of the Batman movies as of late (in particular the critically acclaimed The Dark Knight) might this not be the time to maybe give The Punisher another go?

It’s clear to me that Thomas Jane is into the idea…
